The signs on the Kavarna coastal line date back from three thousand years B.C. During the 5th century B.C. Greek settlers from Mesembria formed a colony Bizone on the place of a Thracian village. This colony traded with other city-states from the Black Sea and East- Mediterranean coast. During the 1st century B.C. an earthquake wrecks part of the city into the sea. However it prospers again in the 2-3 rd century A.C. The city was an economical and cultural center during ancient times. Proofs of that are the remains of a fortress, Christian basilicas, churches, buildings, coins, ornaments, the golden Thracian treasure and many others.

During the 14th century Karvuna and Kaliakra are the main towns of the Karvunskoto principality. After the 15th century the town is renamed to Kavarna. From that time, there are a few monuments fully oreserved - Hamam, bridge, sinks, churches and many inscriptions.

In 1868 Evstratii Rilski establishes the first Bulgarian school and some years later is created the community library "Syglasie".

At the beginning of the 20th century Kavarna flourishes rapidly but in 1913 the town falls under Romanian rule. However Bulgarians do not give up and return the town into Bulgarian borders in 1940.

Landmarks:

The impressive cape Chirakman is one of the symbols of Kavarna. It is located 3 km south of Kavarna as a fine finish of a picturesque valley. For thousands of years this was the place of an intensive life. During the Elian period, on this place was formed a colony called Bizone. During the first century B.C. a powerful earthquake splits the cape in two and a bigger part of it sank into the sea.

Cape Kaliakra juts out into the sea forming a horse-shoe type of bay. The view of it becomes even more impressive once lighted with its 98 projectors and 30 lamps. The area is pronounced a protected region in 1960. It includes 687,5 thousand sq m of wild steppes,400 animal species and 70 meters high coastal cliffs.

During the IV century this was the home of a thracian tribe - tirizi and the name of their settlement - Tirizis. In roman times the fortress expanded and now we can see the remains of aqueduct, churches, bath etc.

In the late antiquity the settlement was called Akre Kastelium and was one of the 15 towns of Skitia province. At that time the fortress was an important part of Via Pontica.

There are many legends about Kaliakra Cape. The most significant tells a story of 40 girls that jumped into the sea to avoid being converted to Islam by the Turks.

The reserve includes numerous monuments from different eras. Here you can see a cave town of 101 homes dating back from 5000 years B.C.

North of Kaliakra are located two zones - Bolata and Tukliman. The cliffs here are a nesting and resting place for 150 bird species.

The village of Kamen Briag, the resort Rusalka, the oldest stone sink and the stone bridge are just a few of the other sites in the municipality of Kavarna.
