Lovech

Lovech District is located in Central North Bulgaria on 4128 sq.km with population about 165 000 people. The district comprises eight municipalities - the town of Lovech which is the administrative and economic center of the district, town of Troyan, Teteven, Lukovit, Ugarchin, Iablanitza, Letnitza and Aproltzi.

Two main roads are passing through the district's territory - E772 ?Iablanitza - Sevlievo - Veliko Tarnovo - Targovishte/ and E 83 /Iablanitza - Lukovit - Pleven - Biala/ They provide good access to whole Bulgaria. Another important transport connection is road II - 35 which is servicing the transport needs north-south.

The town of Lovech is situated on the two sides of the Osam river, which makes a few picturesque curves when going out of the rocky gorge. The choice of a place for the town foundation Between the Staresh hill, Hissaria Hill and Bash Bunar, in the Medieval ages is motivated mainly from strategic reasons. This location of the town is a reason for which it developed as a communication center and not on the last place it provided natural protection to the settlement. The shortest roads between Danube river and the White Sea and Sofia and the Black sea were passing through Lovech in the pass.

The relief of the area surrounding the town of Lovech is hilly and rugged. The difference between the altitude in the town near the river and the upper side of the town is more than 80 m. The hilly relief creates wide variety of nature phenomenon and makes the city very attractive. Lovech is embraced by a beautiful valley. In its east part the town merges with the steep cliffs of the "Stratesh" hill which is urbanized as a town park and is a favorite place for walks and relax.

The caves are interesting feature of Lovech relief. The lime structure of the rocks allow a lot of karst forms to be formed. There are about 16 known caves. Some of them , located in the gorgeous pass of Osam river are said to be inhabited by cave dwellers.

Climate:

The climate in Lovech is temperate continental. The average year temperature is 12 degrees. The summer is relatively hot and the winter cold. The micro climate in the region is milder than in the neighboring Pleven district, because it is kept from the cold north winds. The amount of the rain falls in the area is bigger than in the neighboring regions. More than 2/3 of the year rain falls are in the spring and summer which is very propitious for the agricultural cultures and crops.
The climate conditions in Lovech have been favorable for humans and their economic activities since ancient times. The city suburbs are surrounded with pretty vineyards and orchards. Large deciduous forests are formed in south-west direction from the city. They are followed by meadows, valleys, bushes, springs and all these form the variety of the landscape.

Eight natural reserves and protected areas are located in the area. They all are part from the National Park "Central Balkan" Most famous among them are "The goat's wall", " Steneto " , " Boatin", "Tzarichina"
The region is suitable for the developing of cultural, ecological and SPA tourism. Mineral springs and , caves and water falls distinguish the "Krushina" and "Steneto" reserves .The last one comprises 3578 hectares and is located in the area where the " Osam " river springs . "Steneto" is one of the largest reserves in Bulgaria with great variety of botanical and animal nature. This diversity of nature landmarks attracts a lot of tourists in the region.

Ten km south-east from the town of Troyan in the north parts of the Troyan Mountain, the world famous Troyan Monastery " Uspenie Bogorodichno" is located. It is the third biggest monastery in Bulgaria.
Another place of interest in the region is the cave known as " Saeva dupka" The cave is located close to the village of Brestnitza , 25 km from Teteven. It is 400 m long and the temperature in the halls during the whole year is between 7 and 11 degrees.
