Obzor

At a point roughly midway between Bourgas and Varna, the E-87 highway emerges from the hilly wooded terrain into a brief open coastal stretch and that's where the town of Obzor is located. The green ridges of the Balkan Mountains mix with the fine gold sand of the beach. The city truly deserves to be called The Pearl of the Black Sea.

From years, it's one of the most attractive places in Bulgaria for recreation and summer holiday.

Obzor is with the longest beach on the seaside of Bulgaria stretching for the amazing 8 km.

After the valley of Kamchia River , The Balkan Mountain reaches the valley of Dvoinitsa River and ends round Obzor. Its last part I sthe Eminska Mountain which rather low and wide. It drops steeply towards the valley of Hadjiiska River and ends in the Black Sea with the 60 meter high cape Emine.

The scenery is diverse and extremely beautiful.

Obzor is located in the foot of this mountain between the cape Saint Atanas and cape Emine in the mouth of Dvoinitsa River.

South from the river firth starts the fantastic 8 km beach strip that reaches 60 meters in width. The sand is fine and golden in colour.Extraordinary beautiful are the south beach and the beach of Irakli.

Irakli is a protected area and is a spot that everyone should see. That's where the mountain ridge drops towards the beach from a 97 high cliff.

In south-western direction the heights Balabana are located. Roughly 5 km away from it, are located the Manolova Achma and Chekeles. Located on north is the forest hill - Debelata Baba. Towards the old fortress are the other landmarks Iankutepe, Dylgiat Syrt and Kaleto.

There are several mineral springs in the area.

The numerous archeological remains, fortress walls and columns are proofs for a millennial history of Obzor. First the Thraks settled in here. The area was inhabited by the tribe nipsi. For them Omir writes that they defended Troy and their king Rez was killed by Odissey and Diomed.

Their capital was on cape Emine. The nipsis were farmers and hunters.

During VIII - VI B.C. the coastal line of the Black Sea was flourishing. Soon after the creation of Mesambria the Greeks establish Navloh on the place of today's Obzor.

Centuries after, the settlement was a serious fortress with two gates - North and South. The today's center of Obzor used to be a temple of Jupiter. Nowadays we can find ruins of a roman bath, columns, capitals, aqueducts etc.

In 395 the Byzantian Kingdom is established on these lands. In 681 the Bulgarian Kingdom is pronounced and Obzor becomes a borderline between the two kingdoms.

Vast construction of protection walls gets started and the fortress gets renamed to Koziak. The same name now is used for the hill above the town.

For centuries this was a place of battles between Bulgarians and Byzantines.

Centuries later in 1366 count Amadei Savoyski destroyed all coastal fortresses including Kozyak.

During the XVI century for the first time is mentioned the name Gyozeken - Nice View - Obzor.

Officially the name Obzor was given in 1934.
