Razgrad

Location:

The Razgrad municipality is located in the central part of North-East Bulgaria in the east part of the Danube hilly plain. The municipality center is the town of Razgrad, with population of approximately 39 000 people it is located along the bed of the Beli Lom river and along the north slope of the Razgrad highlands.

The town is located about 60 km away from Rousse, 130 km away from Varna, 55 km away from Shoumen and 36 km away from the town of Targovishte. During the centuries the town of Razgrad was a natural crossroad, crossed by some very important roads connecting central Europe with the Black sea coast and Asia.

The first class road Rousse Varna as well as the railway are passing trough the administrative center of the Razgrad municipality, they are the shortest strategic connections between the black sea and the Dunabe river. The geographic location of the region and the favorable climatic conditions are valued back for centuries.

History:

The picturesque lowland of the Beli Lom river, splitting the town of Razgrad in two parts, was croweded with people from the time of the ancient Thracians. A clear evidence for this are the three prehistoric mounds, the thirty sepulchral mounds and the historical finds in the "Hisarlaka" area to the south of the town of Razgrad.
Centuries later on the ruins of the Thracian village the Romans built the strategic town-fortress Abritus, its name comes from the battle between the Romans and the Goths in the year of 251 in which the emperor Derii Trayan find his death.

The 835 golden coins with total weight 4 kg are from the time of this ancient civilization during the fifth century. This is the biggest golden coins treasure in Bulgaria. Belongings of the local historical museum are also the Golden Pegasus, the collective find of Thracian reliefs and others.

Prehistoric villages and Thracian sepulchral mounds in the vicinity of the town of Razgrad evidence that it is a strategic, administrative and economical center from ancient times to our days. Near the city are located the remains of the ancient town Abritus, which played a vital role in the Roman Empire. Razgrad kept its role as an important military and late on commercial and cultural center in the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire.

Landmarks:

  • Archeological Preserve "Abritus"
    The antique town of Abritus was found by the Romans as a military base in the middle of 2nd century. In the archeological preserve are presented restored remains from the late antique period (IV - VI century) Among the finds is the biggest golden late antique coin treasure from Vth century. Abritus is located in the east end of Razgrad on the road to Shoument and Varna.
  • Ethnographic Museum
    The museum is located in restored houses from XIX century with beautiful shaped yard space. On exposition area of 150 sq.m. is presented the traditional culture of the region. Here in unfolded shape could be seen the main holidays in their calendar, clothes, finery and others.
  • Complex Bulgarian revival houses "Varosha"
    Complex of restored houses in traditional style reminding for the authentic atmosphere of the town during the XIX century.
  • House-museum "Dimiter Nenov"
    In the birth house of the composer and piano-player Dimiter Nenov is arranged an exposition telling a story about his life and his work. In this house you could see the piano on which he took his first lessons, his artistic costume, pictures, belongings and documents.

  • Museum "Stanka and Nikola Ikonomovi"
    In the house of the two eminent revival enlighteners is arranged exposition which gives the opportunity to the visitors to receive information for their life and their activities also an impression from the restorations of the way of life, to feel the atmosphere in which the Bulgarian revival family used to live and work in. The house-museum is located in the old part of the town in "Varosha" distr. Sveti Kliment street, №7.

  • The clock tower
    Built during 1864 on the place of the old tower from XVIII century. It could be distinguished from the other clock towers in Bulgaria with its arc cornice and cupola roof which are influenced by the church architecture. It is located in the central part of the town of Razgrad.
    Momina Cheshma
    This is one of the symbols of the town. This is original and elegantly elaborated cast iron sculpture of girl in classic style and is the only such woman figure in Bulgaria. It is located in the central part of the town.
  • "Sveti Nikolay Chudotvorets" church
    Built during 1860 and renovated during 1903 it is one of the most impressive representative of the church architecture from the middle of XIX century. It is located in the "Varosha" district.
    Hunting farm "Voden"

In the north-east part of the Razgrad municipality on area of 14 469 hectares is stretched the hunting farm "Voden" From its establishment as a hunting farm during the 1964 to our days, Voden is a favorable place for hunters from Bulgaria and abroad. Here you can hunt different game - red deer, deer, fallow deer, wild-boar and many others. Except in the Belovezhkata forest on the border between Poland and Belorussia, only here in Voden the nature lovers can see in natural habitat the giant among the European mammals - aurochs. The hunting farm is visited by many hunting tourists from Germany, Austria, France, Spain, USA, Turkey and others. every year. With its century-old forests, lakes and cozy homes, Voden offers wonderful conditions for hunting and holiday.

In the region of the preserve there are rare works of nature and human hand. Among picturesque karst forms, rare plants and animals are located the archeological objects, depicting one of the most impressive Thracian religious and political centers from the end of the first millennium before Christ.
It is situated near the village of Sveshtari, 10 km north-west from the town of Isperih and 45 km away from the town of Razgrad.
